Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum
A Comprehensive K-12 Social Studies Curriculum
Based on the Michigan Social Studies Content Expectations

The Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum was created by several Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) and Regional Education Service Agencies (RESAs) to assist local school districts in implementing the new social studies content expectations. Through this collaborative work, the developing partners seek to capitalize on each others' expertise and work together to improve teaching and learning in social studies across the state of Michigan. In the interest of saving local school districts time and money, the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum provides high quality curriculum materials free through its website. Some of the aspects and attributes of this project are:

  • A Model Curriculum
  • Based upon Michigan's Social Studies Content Expectations
  • Research-based
  • A Conceptual Framework for Teaching and Learning
  • Visible Learning Progressions
  • Units of Study
  • Resources
  • Assessments
  • Lessons
  • Overarching Questions
  • Graphic Organizers
  • Free

The intended uses of the Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum include:

  • A district curriculum or resource for curriculum work
  • A conceptual framework
  • A guide to focus instruction and assessment
  • As a way to assist schools in communicating the curriculum to parents
  • To guide grade level discussions
  • To focus professional development
  • To guide special education teachers in assisting students

PLEASE NOTE:  There are currently two acceptable configurations for 6th and 7th grade social studies.  World Geography approaches the geography of the world itself and draws content expectations from the 6th and 7th grade social studies GLCE.  Ancient World History draws all the eras 1-3 content standards from both grade levels into one course.  The other acceptable configuration is to study the Western Hemisphere in one grade level, and the Eastern Hemisphere in the other.
