Classrooms for Students with Cognitive Impairments

For Students with Cognitive Impairment the Wexford-Missaukee ISD operates self contained classrooms for students with moderate and severe cognitive impairments from each of the seven local districts. These classrooms service students ages 5 through 26. The classrooms are located in four different locations within the Cadillac area to support inclusive opportunities whenever possible.

The WMISD has adopted a standards-based program designed specifically for students with significant disabilities. It is aligned with Michigan’s common core and the philosophy that all students must participate and all students must show progress. The curriculum includes systems to determine baseline information on each student; monthly instructional targets with differentiated lesson plans; benchmark assessments; a variety of rubrics to determine prompt levels, student interests, and levels of independence performing functional skills; along with an observation form to monitor student involvement.
